Ruby Bourbon Brown Derby

It’s Valentine’s Day week and for that, we all deserve a pink(ish) drink. So, I introduce to you for the very first time: The Ruby Bourbon Brown Derby. And, with it, I also introduce to you the mixologist here at Olive and Artisan: Ryan.

I can’t for the life of me make a mixed drink quite like Ryan. His love for the coupe and his affinity for bourbon was the inspiration. Along with a helping word from me, “Can you please make it Valentine-y”. Please and thank you, he delivered.

He also makes really cute kids, but there’s no real recipe for that.

Ryan is a part of the boo-crew here at the Flores house. For about a year and a half now, we’ve been having a weekly Scary Movie Night where we get together and try our very best to watch every scary movie known to mankind. We’ve seen some really questionable movies. My body tends to shut-down when they get too scary. I call it fear sleep. We’ve contemplated a podcast, a blog, an Instagram but so far all we’ve managed to do is eat popcorn.

His advice for the Ruby Bourbon Brown Derby is this:

  • Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and lemon juice are paramount.
  • Bulleit Bourbon Whiskey is his bourbon of choice and so, with a firm finger, he directs you to heed his word.
  • If you can somehow find two marinated cherries with their stems attached, so that one cherry is in the drink and one cherry is out, it is preferred. However, it’s also like finding a four-leaf clover.
  • If you do not like the pulp that comes from the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, feel free to strain.

The Ruby Bourbon Brown Derby is sweet but not too sweet. It’s balanced with the bitterness of the grapefruit and the smoke from the bourbon. It’s really quite the taste experience. So, if you’re looking for a cute drink that is packed with flavor, this is the one for you. Don’t forget the cherry and definitely drink responsibly.
