Crochet Kingcup Coaster

It’s the middle of February. 2021 is finally underway. I can’t remember a single day in January. Did it even happen? Or did we collectively skip over that month? Then again, December of 2020 is a fading memory, like  –

do people talk about the days passing because they don’t have anything else to say?

I crocheted a flower to put a cup on. The petals blossom out like the saucer under a tea cup. They elevate the daily ritual of coffee in a mug, set down while you click through dumb stuff on your phone.

The coaster grew from a block in Jan Eaton’s 200 Crochet Blocks. Those familiar with that book will recognize the petals from the Kingcup square. Because nothing is new under the sun, I borrowed the basic structure of her block and added in some bits.

A bouquet of these cotton flowers would brighten up any side table. It’s nice when flowers last longer than a week. These will but perhaps with a coffee stain or two. Please wash them with a little baby shampoo if you care. Lay flat to dry. Otherwise, collect coffee drip souvenirs.

Flowers in the winter are most precious, until the crocus leaves nudge through the cold ground and we can hope again for spring. We have much to hope for this year, perhaps much to look forward to. Let’s notice the days as they pass. Let’s see what blossoms.
